Taking Anxiety For A Ride

Ever listened to somebody define anxiety in precisely the way that it changed it completely?

I won't forget sitting in class and having my master coach say to everybody, “Now a large amount of things are on the point of changing in your life, and this can bring up some hysteria, but just think of anxiety as new things occuring. “

New things happening? I haven't ever thought of it like that before. When we get down to define anxiety in a firm sense, it’s a feeling of worry or uneasiness about a situation that truly has a little bit of fear surrounding it. What could actually happen next? What will the end result be? In a way, anxiety is a fantastic indicator of forward thinking or “row boat thinking,” a phrase I have recently coined.

What’s the thought behind “row boat thinking?”

Each of us are given a interesting narrative throughout our lives that sounds a lot like this…”I’ll be happy when that occurs. It will all turn out when I get there. ” The problem is, we are rowing towards this island that does not exist. We think it’s there, but it is one of the most beautifully manufactured mirages we have ever seen. It’s sexy. It’s seductive. It’s just enough to keep us grasping and thirsting for more. But there’s serious danger in this type of thinking meanging that anxiety can be our best indicator that we are really caught in the act of doing it in the first place.

Living in the future can have as many negative side effects as living during the past. We all really know what it is actually like to desire to escape our past, but I am going to hazard to say that we absolutely must avoid living in the future just as much. We will be able to get stuck in some place, a particularly uncertain place, that frankly is beyond our control. Should you set targets and have a vision for what you truly desire out of your life? Definitely. But the danger is building the bedrock of your true happiness on such a place.

The one guarantee I am able to make you about this life is that it will absolutely change. You cannot go to the past, the present is subject to being changed at any moment and the future is to be decided.

So what can we do?

That uncertainty…love it. Embrace the hell out of it. The doubtful places in your life are chances to have nothing short than magic occur. Do you truly know what is going to happen? Of course not. Will you attempt to project as much as is possible? Yes, we’ve all done that haven’t we? But when you start returning to the current time, constantly because our minds never stop getting distracted, you get to totally be here. Here truly is a great place to be. Start actually seeing what is occurring around you instead of spending too much time distracting yourself from everything that is not right here and now.

So all anxiety truly is, when it boils down to it, is new things happening. Like that feeling and sit with it. Basically take the time to really feel the nervousness in your gut and then take a minute to start to understand why it’s coming up. “In this moment, what is the thing that’s happening right now that’s new?” When you attempt to do that, well, things become lots more fun. But when you stop living in days to come the anxiousness disipates and begins to leave altogether.

It is all about how we define anxiety in the first instance.
